ENHANCEMENT OF KENAF PLANT (Hibiscus cannabinus L.) TO UPTAKE HEAVY METALS THROUGH SOIL AMENDMENT WITH BIOCHAR AND MULCHING
Abstract
Environmental pollution and its detrimental impacts on public health have emerged as a significant global concern, prompting researchers to seek innovative methods to mitigate or transform this pollution into less hazardous forms. Environmental pollution includes pollution of soil, water and air. The aims of this study were to soil amendment through cultivation of kenaf plant with adding biochar and mulch. Kenaf was planted in two different locations in Erbil governorate which were (Grdarasha and Gwer), both fields may face soil pollution due to industries and agricultural activity. Additionally, it was to understand the pollution rate in both fields and to indicate how to decline the level of heavy metals. Also to investigate how biochar and mulch promote kenaf plant to uptake heavy metals in contaminated soils. The results showed that kenaf plant had high ability in soil heavy metal uptake. The highest accumulation values of (Pb, Cu, Ni and Cr) were found in the control treatment (0.07, 0.07, 0.09 and 0.05) ppm, respectively at Grdarasha. It was the best indication to confirm kenaf uses as phytoremediation. While, at Gwer location the interaction of (B1M0) was recorded the highest accumulation values of (Cu, Ni, Cr and Fe) in the kenaf leaves (0.06, 0.08, 0.03 and 4.50) ppm, respectively. Additionally, biochar and mulch caused to soil heavy metals lowering due to catch and effect on their mobility. On the other hand, both biochar and mulch in general aid kenaf plant to be more capable in heavy metal uptake.
